Day 4 and Day 5 (Updated pictuers added)

(Side note: you can click on the pictures and some computers will let you see a larger one.)

We didn't find any little green men! Well, any that were alive anyway. As a matter of fact, after the taxidermists got finished with them, they turned grey!! We didn't tarry in Roswell since they wouldn't let us anywhere around area 57.

We spent the night in Las Cruces, NM and this morning headed out for Tucson for repairs to our communication system in our helmets. We were tired of saying "huh?" every time the other said something and still not being able to completely understand each other. It was a long hot ride and after they were so gracious at J&M to update our speakers to a larger size, we headed back toward Santa Fe. We have stopped for the night in Lordsburg, NM, and Larry is cleaning up the bike while I am sitting in a nice cool motel room. Doesn't seem quite right, does it?

We had to go through one of the Border Patrol stations, but we were only asked if we were both American citizens and were allowed to go on our way. Guess we didn't fit the profile!

The highlight of our day yesterday, however, was seeing the White Sands National Monument. As the white sand came into view, we were not sure exactly what we were seeing. It was just a wide band of white all across the horizon. The white sand is gypsum and there are actually dunes of the stuff, just like at the beach. We drove into the park on pavement and were told that it was 8 miles to the monument, but the last 3 miles of that was sand. We are not comfortable riding a big bike across sand. Big bikes fall over in sand! The park ranger told us that there was a place to turn around before we got to the end of the pavement, but, you guessed it, the turnaround was sand! We finally got turned around on the pavement and headed back out. Larry decided he just had to get off the bike and see what the sand felt like. I don't think you are supposed to do that. Just after he got back on the bike, a patrol car pulled up behind us and turned on the lights and siren! It followed us for an eternity as Larry worked to get pulled over. But...we were lucky that time because he was more interested in the truck in front of us. It was a few tense minutes though! Whewww!

We then rode by the Air Force base even though we could not see any of it, but we did see signs pointing to the small missile testing area.

Tomorrow we're off to Santa Fe for a little shopping and hoping for a little cool down.
